Animal Kingdom - What's New

Florida Guide > Animal Kingdom

Animal Kingdom is one of the newest, comparatively, of the Disney theme parks within Walt Disney World and is about to undergo a massive change with a new Avatar based land.

Construction of the new “Pandora: The World of Avatar” land started on Jan. 8, 2014. It is the largest expansion in Animal Kingdom history, the new land will invite visitors to meet Pandora and experience flying with the banshees, encounter the Na’vi and explore a magical environment with mountains that float and interactive plants that glow at night. There will be roller coasters, rides and amazing shows including a possible day time parade. Unfortunately the land is not due for completion until 2017. However all the press releases show it as being a fantastic addition to Animal Kingdom.

Mickey’s Jammin’ Jungle Parade finished on the last day of May this year as the route it used has now been taken over by building works for the Avatar land. We do not yet know if a new parade will be taking it’s place after Avatar opens.

Disney has released new details for “Rivers of Light” - a night time spectacular. An amazing new water based show will feature live music, floating lanterns, water screen and a lot of projected animal majesty, to be located on the Discovery River between Discovery Island and Expedition Everest where we’ve been seeing them playing with test barges on and off for the last year. Part of the largest expansion in the park’s history, “Rivers of Light” will be a show unlike anything ever seen in Disney Parks. A start date has not been given yet for this new experience, but it is expected to open sometime during the spring of 2016.

Currently much is still the same. All the old favourites are still there; the Kilimanjaro Safari in “Africa”, It’s Tough To Be A Bug show on Discovery Island, Pocahontas and Her Forest Friends show and The Festival of the Lion King in camp Minnie - Mickey, the Kali River Rapids in “Asia” and the Dinoland and Rafiki’s Planet Watch areas.

However, The Tree of Life is currently not visible any more but it may be placed some where new in the future. Rumour has it that it is being re-fitted with lights to make a spectacular night show.

The car park has already started expansion work to allow for the extra expected visitors to the new improved Animal Kingdom.

I’m looking forward to it.
