Florida Guide > Other Activities
Central Florida Zoo and Botanical Gardens is located in Sanford on North West Highway. This will be about an hour from your holiday villa in The Parks area.
This zoo has been in existence in one form or another since 1923 and it started with people donating animals to the local fire service (why they did this is not documented)
18 years later it moved to the site of the current city hall and 34 years after that is settled in its current location.
They now house over 400 animals all kept in lush tropical surroundings.
Weekends are a good time to visit for it is then that they hold the elephant encounters and keeper chats.
Lets take a look at a typical saturday:
11. a. m. Elephant Demo
11. 30 Bird Show
1. p. m. Bug Encounter
2 p. m. Elephant demo
2. 15 Primate feeding
2. 30 Feline Feeding

The little ones are sure to enjoy the Childrens Zoo where they can get up close to turkeys, llamas, zebo, goats and sheep.
Some people are fascinated by snakes and in the Herpetarium they boast the largest collection in the south east. There are frogs here too!
Make sure that you pack the childrens cozzies as they will want to have a cool down around in the Wharton Smith Tropical Splash. This is a childrens paradise of water play all a zoo theme. There are chairs and sun brellas for mum and dad.
One of the stand out things to do at this zoo is the ZOOm Air Adventure. Here you are up in the trees traversing by zip, rope bridges and discs. There is an extra charge for this.
As a final treat you may want to take the little ones on the train; this is a one fifth replica of The Florida East Coast Champion and takes you through wet lands for about 1 mile including a longish tunnel. This costs $3 per adult and $2 per child. The carousel also attracts an extra fee but just $1 for adults and the kids ride free of charge.
