Epcot Centre - Future World
Florida Guide > Disney Parks
When Walt Disney was planning Epcot he envisioned it as a real working city, thus the name E.P.C.O.T experimental prototype community of tomorrow. He said “it will be a community of tomorrow that will never be completed but will always be introducing and testing and demonstrating new materials and systems.” Epcot may not have turned out exactly as Walt imagined but future world certain gives a chance to see state of the art technology presented in a way that is both educational and entertaining.
Epcot opened in October 1982, it covers almost 260 acres making it almost twice the size of the Magic kingdom and is split into two distinct areas Future World and the World Showcase. Future World is the first area you come to when you enter the park. Dominated by the golf ball like structure of Spaceship Earth, Future World is as it’s name implies dedicated to exploring the latest technology and what it has to offer us in our daily lives.
Future World is split into nine distinct areas, Spaceship Earth, Universe of Energy, Wonders of Life, Mission Space, Test track, Innoventions, The Living seas, The Land and Imagination. Each area examines and investigates the way different aspects of our lives have evolved looking at health, communication, transportation our use of energy and the environment they also look at how all these aspects are progressing into the future. This may sound dull but it certainly isn’t with rides that let you soar high above the ground in a hang glider, travel into space or under the sea, let you meet dinosaurs or become a living version of a test crash dummy, Future World is anything but dull. As well as the rides there are lots of interactive exhibits throughout the area where kids are encouraged to take a hands on approach to technology and have fun at the same time.
There are several places to eat around Future World so you won’t go hungry. If you want a full service restaurant try the Coral Reef within the Living sea pavilion where you get a great view of the Living Seas aquarium. If you are looking for something a little more relaxed you have plenty of choice with the Electric Umbrella in Innoventions plaza offering burgers, hot dogs, fries etc, the Sunshine Seasons Food Fair within the Land pavilion which is a small food court offering a wide selection of different dishes including baked potatoes, pasta, salads and sandwiches. One of our favourite places to grab a quick bite is the Fountain View Espresso and bakery. Here you can get some lovely speciality coffee and wonderful diet busting cakes and pastries but the reason we like to take a break at this particular spot is because the outside café area has a great view of the Innoventions Plaza fountain. Watching the water ballets that run every fifteen minutes provides a very relaxing end to what can be a very hectic day in the park.
