An Arty Day Out!

Florida Guide > Places to Visit

The Orlando Museum of Art is located in North Mills Avenue in Orlando. This will be roughly about an hours drive from your vacation villa.

This museum has been up and running for around 90 years and the richness and depth of the exhibits is clear to see.

One of the most interesting parts of this museum is the part devoted to The Art of the Ancient Americans.

It always sends a shiver up my spine to see things crafted thousands of years ago and this section tells the tale from up to four thousand years ago showing the art and craft of many different Native American groups.

Next, is a section devoted to American art from slightly more modern times (well up to the nineteen forties anyway)

And finally a display of art up to the modern day .

Perhaps the most interesting part of the museum is that devoted to African Art. This archetypically colourful display leans heavily towards art pieces created to decorate the person. Lots of fabric and beadwork from the eastern African culture is represented here and it is clear to see how much African art informs the Western fashions and home styles.

Finally if modern graphics floats your boat (and it does not even launch mine) there is a collection of over 150 pieces here.

Andy Warhol, of course, will be the first name to spring to mind but also Bryan Hunt and Katherine Bowling are represented among many others. The artworks are original and all are signed.

As I write, they are holding regular Original Art parties on the first thursday of every month. Each month they feature different local artists and there is live music.

The cafe and bar are open during this period and the session lasts for 3 hours from 6 p. m. Cost is a modest $10 per person.

Otherwise, you need to check with the museum to see what is going on during your visit. Regular special events are held here so therefore there is a good chance that something will be happening while you are over.

The Orlando Museum of Art is open from 10 a. m. to 4 p. m. from tuesday to friday and at weekends the times are 10 a. m. So as you may have guessed, you should not time your visit for a monday because they will be closed.
