Fantasy of Flight Day Trip

Florida Guide > Days Out

The attraction called Fantasy of Flight is just what it says and a dream outing for all those interested in flying.

This museum is the brain child of the exotically named Kermit Weeks and he claims he has the largest collection of vintage aircraft in the world.

Kermit was born in Salt Lake City but brought up in Miami. He had a lifelong passion for flying and in his time he was an aircraft designer and competed in aerobatic contests.

At the early age of 17 he started building his own aircraft which took him 4 years to complete. He became part of the United Staes aerobatics team and had a very succesful time winning many awards.

Slowly he built up a collection of old aircraft and stared a small museum in Miami. In the mid eighties he aquired the land in Polk City and started to create The Fantasy of Flight. In the middle of this there was a hurricane which all but destroyed the attraction but by 1994 he was ready to open the doors again.

The main purpose of your visit will be to marvel at the 40 vintage planes on display (some in flying condition thanks to their ministrations)

The hang glider experience is not to be missed and the immersion experience takes you back to the times of the earliest attemps at flying through to the 1st World War.

There is a good interactive area where you start off by making paper airplanes and move on to a flight simulator.

While you are here you can take a ride in a bi plane or a balloon flight and there is no restrictions on cameras or video equipment in order that you can capture this on film.

They often hold special events here and you can check this by logging on to their website www. fantasyofflight. com

Admission costs $28. 95 per adult and $12. 85 per child. O. A. P. s can get in for $24. 95 each. There is a $2 discount if you book on line.

I would allow a half day for this outing and you could finish up for a bite at the Compass Rose Diner which opens for fewer hours than the attraction at 11. a. m to 3. p. m.
