Harmoney Barber Shop – Magic Kingdom
Florida Guide > Disney Parks
Not many people know that there is a real barber shop in Magic Kingdom but it is well worth a visit.Located near the Emporium gift shop with a signature candy-striped pole outside it is like barber shops used to be in bygone days.
We went in thinking it was just another shop to mooch around but it was like stepping back in time - hair tonics and talcum powders line the dark burgundy shelves and there are lots of antiques – the old barbershop chairs look like something out of a Western film!
The Dapper Dan's barbershop quartet keep popping up singing as well as chatting to the customers – very funny and entertaining.
It is full of antiques – all of which work. A turn-of-the-century Western Electric phone box is still used to make phone calls! The cash register is ancient but they ring your money up in it! If you ask the barbers can tell you all about all the antiques in the shop and have some great stories to tell.
Our barber told us that they do between 300 and 400 haircuts a week.If you have problems with your son having his haircut, this is the place for "First Haircuts". Young Walt Disney World guests who receive their first haircut at the Magic Kingdom barbershop are treated to many delightful surprises, from "pixie dust" and bubbles to Mickey Mouse stickers and an extra-special "My 1st Haircut" set of Mouse Ears and certificate. Haircuts for children age 12 and under are priced at just $14.It is worth it – the one lady said her son always screamed, kicked and had even bitten a previous hairdresser but he was as quiet as a mouse during this haircut! Goofy even popped in and tickled some of the kids – and adults!
Another popular treatment for kids as well as kids-at-heart is coloured hair gel, which costs five dollars - of course there are also services for grown-ups to enjoy. An adult haircut costs $17. Beard and moustache trims are $10.My dad had a good sit down in the air-conditioned shop and said it cost less than he pays in the UK!!
Harmony Barber Shop guests are taken on a first-come, first-served basis. The barbershop does not accept appointments so you may have to wait but if you go straight there, you can gauge the wait.
Just another one of the Disney’s “I didn’t know they did that!!”
