Mickeys’ Backyard BBQ
Florida Guide > Dining
If the children are regularly on your back to meet some of their favourite Disney characters during your vacation in Orlando then there are a number of avenues open to you.
The simplest and cheapest way is to meet up with them in the theme parks but without any prior notification of when, where and who will turn up, this can be a bit of a lottery with disappointing results.
By far the best way is to book a Disney Character Dining Experience which is far from cheap at around $50 a head but, at least it guarantees an appearance from your favourite characters. There are lots of resort hotels and restaurants to choose from which offer this service and it’s worth calling the Disney Dining Line to see what is available and what suits your particular circumstances.
If your children are intent on getting up close and personal with that famous mouse, then Mickey’s Backyard BBQ offers the perfect opportunity to meet the main characters in their western gear, get their autographs and take part in the obligatory photo shoot. The excitement when the likes of Mickey, Minnie and Goofy are around can cause a bit of a stampede but provided you are happy to put up with a bit of push and shove then the kids are sure to love it.
Mickey’s Backyard BBQ takes part in the Outdoor Pavilion in Wilderness Lodge Resort & Campgrounds and can be a bit tricky to find. Probably the best way is to leave the car in the main parking lot and get a shuttle bus to Pioneer Hall. From there it’s around a ten minute walk to the pavilion.
The all you can eat buffet was unsurprisingly American themed and offered hotdogs, ribs, chicken and corn on the cob. All beverages were included in the price as was the beer which was a real bonus. On a hot night, it helped quenched the thirst and tasted even better knowing their was no additional charge.
The floor show was loud and fast moving with line dancing, country music and an artist performing roping tricks. The Disney characters get heavily involved and are happy to invite the children up on to the stage to join them in a number of dance routines and general interaction.
As we mentioned earlier it can get a little bit chaotic but it is a wonderful experience for the kids and something they will talk about for many months to come.
