Mamas Greek Cuisine in Florida (yes, really!)

Florida Guide > Dining

Are you planning to visit Tarpon Springs during your Florida holiday ? If the answer is yes, then I can recommend eating at ' Mamas Greek Cuisine'

The ' Mama' from the restaurants name was born in Greece but came to Tarpon Springs in 1961. Naturally her husband was a sponge diver and for the first 17 years Mama stayed at home raising their 5 children.

In 1978, Mama opened the restaurant along with one of her sons with the mission statement to serve fresh food cooked the Greek way.

Not for nothing is this Mamas known as the restaurant ' where the Greeks like to eat' This is always a good recommendation when eating in a strange place; look for where the locals go!

So now, what was I going to eat?

This is not the time to count calories or order a green salad so let us look at the starters:

Choose from Shrimp Saganaki, Dolmades, Charbroiled Octupus or Fried Zucchini. The prices for the starters go from $5. 50 to $10. 95.

Now you are ready for the star of the show, the main course.

I have often ordered Spanakopita on holidays in Greece so this tempts me but really, when you are so close to the sea should you not choose seafood? By the way, Spanakopita is a Greek spinach pie that has feta cheese, onions and dill.

My eye falls on the Seafood Combo; this comprises of Fried Calamari, Char broiled Octupus and Pan Fried Smelts.

That is settled then; but wait; another combo tempts me. Pastitso, Moussaka, Dolmades and Gyro. What to choose? Only one thing for it; I order one and partner chooses the other and we share.

All main courses come with soup, salad, veg, chips and Greek bread and cost between $10 and $25.

The Greeks are not big on puds but there is a choice of Baklava or Rice Pudding if you have room (too sweet for my taste) Maybe a good idea to move on somewhere else for an ice cream annd coffee?

There is a lunchtime special menu on offer up to 4 p. m. This has various tasty sandwiches or the afore mentioned Spinach Pie (Spanakopita)plus your choice of a salad, soup or chips. All this costs under $10 and a soft drink is included in the price.

The weekends are a good time to visit since there is entertainement; all 3 days have live Greek music and on a sunday they throw in a belly dancer as well.
