The Dolphins at Discovery Cove
Florida Guide > Discovery Cove
One of the highlights of everyone’s visit to Seaworld has to be either feeding the dolphins themselves or watching whilst others feed them.
Friends of our decided to treat their family to an Up Close Tour with the Dolphins and they loved every minute of it as well as learning a lot. The cost was approx. $50 each adult and $30 per child under 10 years old and they said it was well worth the money. I am not sure if you can book on the day but I know they pre-booked theirs on line.
They met at the Dolphin Nursery and the guides gave them some facts about dolphins as well as answering any questions they had they then went to watch a training session with the dolphins. Then down at the pool they were taught how to attract the dolphins with hand signals which they then practised with their own dolphins while photographers on the far side took photos of them. After the tour as a family they decided to go to Blue Horizon especially to watch the show and see how the trainers gave the hand signals to the dolphins. This tour is on our “To Do” list for our next visit.
Until a few years ago at Dolphin Cove you just queued at the food window and bought the fish to feed to the dolphins at random. These days they have a different system there are now two entrances and you can opt to go and buy the food and go to a smallish feeding area or go to the left and to a larger area where you can also pet the dolphins although obviously they are more likely to go to where the food is at feeding times.
Whether we decide to buy food or not we usually spend quite a time here petting the dolphins and taking lots of photos. Do not forget to wash your hands before you leave this area.
When you leave the Pool area continue along the path to the underground viewing area which is quite spectacular. It is always very busy here and initially it may take some time to get close to the see through windows to view the dolphins up close but it well worth the wait.
The views here are quite breath taking and children in particular love to press against the windows to see these beautiful creatures, it is also a great photo opportunity not only to take the dolphins but also the children with the dolphins as a backdrop.
Enjoy Dolphin Cove, we always do.
