Downtown Disney is an area of Disney separate from the theme parks made up of entertainment, shops and restaurants. There are three distinct areas; Downtown Disney Marketplace which is home to the largest Disney store in the world, Downtown Disney West where you will find restaurants, theatres, shows and amusements and Pleasure Island which comes alive each evening when the nightclubs open and live performances take place.
Downtown Disney MarketplaceThere are eight restaurants in Marketplace ranging from fast food to themed dining. One of our favourite places for a mid afternoon snack is Ghirardelli Soda Fountain for one of their special ice-cream sundaes.
To keep the children amused visit the Lego Imagination Centre where there is an enormous assortment of play sets, have your photograph taken with a life-size Lego model and visit the huge Lego sea monster, called Brickley, who swims in the nearby lake.
Shop ‘til you drop in The World of Disney the largest Disney Store in the World or Disney’ s Days of Christmas where Christmas lasts three hundred and sixty five days of the year.
Some of the nicest chocolate I have ever tasted is at the Ghirardelli Chocolate Shop. As you enter be sure to look for the member of staff who gives out free samples!
The Marina and Boat rental is situated to the far right of Marketplace. Rent a “Water Mouse”, a canopy boat or drive a 21-foot, 10-passenger pontoon boat.
Downtown Disney West Side West Side is home to the world famous Cirque du Soleil “La Nouba”, an absolute must-see if you have never visited any Cirque du Soleil attractions before. Although quite expensive, $95 plus tax for the best seats, it really is as exceptional and outstanding show.
If you want to see the latest movies head over to the AMC Pleasure Island 24 theatres Complex or visit DisneyQuest with its five floors of cutting edge technology, 3-D experiences and virtual reality.
Restaurants include Wolfgang Puck, Planet Hollywood and Bongos Cuban Café which is owned by the singer Gloria Estafan.
The Virgin Megastore is located in West Side together with a whole host of other shops. A favourite of ours is “Magic Masters”, a magic shop with daily demonstrations from the Disney Magician.
Pleasure IslandFive nightclubs and a two comedy clubs come alive every evening at Pleasure Island. One ticket gives you unlimited access to all of the clubs. So you can dance the night away or laugh until you cry, the choice is yours!
