R Bar Treasure Island

Florida Guide > Dining

Usually at least once a year when we go to the villa in Orlando we have a few days at Treasure Island on the Gulf Coast. We found this place about 6 years ago when we wanted somewhere with a beach, a pool for the girls and easy access on foot if different members of the family wanted to do their own thing. Treasure Island, which is located about 2 miles from St Petersburg beach area has a huge white sand beach where dad can hire a cabana, Mom can sunbathe is her chair by the waters edge the girls could make sand castles. There is a Trolley Bus than runs regularly to St Petersburg beach, Clearwater and St Petersburg town as well as many other places, you can just hop on and hop off. This means no one is reliant on the car and different family members can explore on their own.

However it was not until our last visit that we discovered the R Bar. I had read reports about our motel on the internet and several people said how helpful a certain member of staff on the front desk was in recommending places to eat. On our fist day I went to see her and amongst others she recommended the RBar.

We discovered it was only a block away from the beach and just a 5 minute stroll from where we were staying. My parents found it first when they were out shopping it just looked like a local bar and probably one they would not have gone into if it had not been recommended. They decided before eating there they would go in for a drink to see what it was like before deciding if we should eat there. They were surprised how busy the bar area was it was late afternoon and already several people were eating. A lot of the customers were locals and both they and the staff made them very welcome. Some of them were watching the ball games on the TVs. My parents had a couple of drinks and when asked if they were going to eat said they would return later to be told “we have entertainment on at night and tonight the special is all you can eat crabs legs. ”

They came back for us telling us not to get dressed up and we walked the short distance to the R Bar.

We were quite surprised when we saw it on the outside but inside although not big the atmosphere was great and everyone was very laid back. The entertainment, a singer with a guitar and a mike in the corner, had started,

We all decided to have the all you can eat crabs legs and I must admit they were the best I have ever tasted. The huge portions came served with a delicious baked potato and coleslaw and a dish of warm butter to dip the crab in. As soon as you finished your crab you were immediately asked if you wanted more. I think my Father and my brother must have had about 5lbs each!

We had a great evening the music was great and would play any request the place was buzzing. The food was very good and reasonably priced.

They have different specials each night. My parents went there just before Christmas and on Christmas Day back in the UK they did mention more than once that if they had been at the R Bar the Christmas Menu had the choice of all u can eat prime rib or all u can eat crabs legs!
