Christmas in Orlando - A wonderful Treat.

Florida Guide > Hints and Tips

The first thing you will notice about Christmas in Orlando is when you arrive at the airport, the enormous Christmas tree decorated in beautiful colours and lights. This is a sign of what is to come. Every where you go you will see decorations the like of which you will never have seen unless you have been to the United States at Christmas before.

As Soon as Thankgsgiving day is over (on the last Thursday in November) then the decorating starts in earnest. The owners of the houses set to decorating their homes as per The Griswolds in National Lampoons Christmas film. The lights are every where, all over the front of the house, the front fences and the gates. On the front lawns are nodding reindeer, huge Santa Claus inflatables, nativity scenes, toy trains full of presents and even Disney characters in Christmas costumes. I would not like to get their electricity bills!

In the shops, which actually start a bit earlier, there are Christmas trees as tall as two story buildings, Santa’s grottos complete with reindeer and elves tempting all the little children to come and tell Santa what they would like him to bring them. Christmas music is in all the shops and there is a very festive atmosphere every where you go.

In the theme parks Christmas is well and truly underway. The parks that have parades have all the characters dresses in festive costumes and at The Magic Kingdom in Disney World on certain nights, parents can book for them and their children to go to Mickey’s Merry Christmas Party. At the Bears Jamboree in Frontier Land at The Magic Kingdom, the bears are dressed up and sing Christmas songs instead of their normal routine.

In Disney’s Hollywood Studios, they have the Osborne lights which turns all the buildings into a world of lights with snow falling and carols playing. Even the trash cans and bicycles parked outside the houses are covered in lights. There are angels suspended from high above the park and huge Christmas trees on top of buildings. The children absolutely love it. (Actually, the grown ups do too)

At Seaworld they have special Christmas attractions such as a train that takes you to Lapland to meet Santa, his reindeer and the elves, plus penguins and polar bears. One of the shows features iceskating stars performing.

All the shops in the parks are decorated and have Christmas music playing. This is when you can buy your favourite characters in Christmas costumes. Mickey Mouse dressed at Santa and Winnie the Pooh dressed as a Christmas elf are just too adorable to resist buying.

At the Gaylords hotel in Orlando, they have an Ice Spectacular that features spectacular ice sculptures. You can book to go and see them and wander through an icy paradise of snow and sculptures.

So do give Orlando a visit at Christmas, you will never forget it.
