United Kingdom Pavilion – Epcot
Florida Guide > Epcot
The World Showcase at Epcot provides the visitor with a variety of attractions, but I guess we Brits have an inbuilt fascination to investigate just how good a job Walt Disney World has done in making the United Kingdom Pavilion as authentic as possible.
Those of you familiar with the geography of Epcot will know that the ‘United Kingdom’ is situated to the left of the International Gateway and is next door to the Canada Pavilion (towards the bottom right of the World Showcase on the Park map).
It is also adjacent to Harry Ramsden’s…. . who serve delicious piping hot fish and chips to take-away.
Disney has certainly done its homework in terms of historical content. Within the immediate vicinity are excellent replica models of a typical English pub (Rose & Crown),
Hampton Court Palace, a thatched cottage based on Anne Hathaway’s home in Stratford-upon-Avon and, arguably the most recognised object associated with the United Kingdom, the red phone box.
Although there is no specific attraction here, visitors can delight in downing a ‘yard of ale’ served in authentic glasses or enjoy a street show staged by a group of performers who interact with the audience in an assortment of comical sketches. You can also sing along with the ‘British Invasion’ who play many of the Beatles greatest hits in their repertoire.
Tucked away behind the Rose & Crown is a lovely spot featuring an English garden with beautifully manicured, topiaries and Tigger’s maze…. . a real favourite with the children. During our time there we were entertained by an impromptu visit from Mary Poppins.
Although we didn’t eat at the pub the food looked very tempting with the traditional dishes of roast beef & Yorkshire pudding, bangers and mash and steak and kidney pie on the menu. From people we have spoken to, the food is excellent and good value for money. If you are lucky enough to be seated at a table on the terrace, we are told that the view over the lagoon is brilliant, especially if you time your visit to coincide with Illuminations, the evening firework extravaganza. We will definitely be booking a table on our next visit.
I suppose the purists may argue that nothing can beat the real thing, but being fair to Disney, they have tried really hard to replicate a typical English scene, including cobbled streets and red phone boxes in order to make this an enjoyable experience. I for one was very impressed with their attention to detail and was not in the least disappointed.
